- Recycling is the process of turning trash into new usable products. Recycling saves the environment by reusing natural resources instead of continuing to deplete them. Most things we buy and use in our homes and church can be recycled into new materials. Yes recycling can take a bit of your time and may take some of the convenience out of products you use but everyone benefits in the long run.
- Plastic, specifically plastic bottles, can be recycled which saves petroleum, energy and it stops those containers form entering the landfill where they take thousands of years to decompose. Clearly if you never used plastic bottles, part of the cycle would stop right there, but at today's supermarket it is almost impossible to avoid purchasing products packaged in plastic.
- "Americans send about 38 billion water bottles a year to land fills.1 Considering more than 24 million gallons of oil — enough to fuel 30,000 cars for a year — are required to produce just one billion bottles, the environmental impact of plastic bottle waste is truly staggering" 1, 2
- In 2 weeks, Americans throw enough glass bottles and jars out to fill the New York Trade Center’s twin towers; and Americans go through on average 2.5 million plastic bottles per hour. 3
There are enough stats on recycling to boggle anyone's mind so here are a few things you should know and something you can do right now if you municipality is not recycling.
First, look for the symbol on the bottom of most plastic containers that will tell you how to group your trash for recycling
Second, you can bring your recycled material to a center each saturday right here in metro Detroit. There is a recycling center at 1331 Holden that is open on Saturdays and Wednesdays every week. There are location all around the city.
